Lucas
Fourteen-year-old Lucas is a bright, painfully shy kid whose intelligence and awkwardness make him feel like an outsider at his new school. Small in stature but big in heart, he quietly adores Maggie, the enigmatic new girl, while leaning on Cappie, an older boy who treats him like a brother. When Cappie and Maggie are drawn to one another, Lucas is confronted with his first real heartbreak and the sharp sting of loneliness.
Determined to change his place in the world, Lucas tries to prove himself through small acts of courage and loyalty, from standing up to bullies to throwing himself into the school's baseball team. Those efforts reveal both the cruelty and the kindness of adolescence: classmates can be dismissive and cruel, but friendships can also be surprisingly deep and formative. Lucas’s earnest attempts to fit in and be noticed illuminate the awkward comedy of teenage life as much as its pain.
The film is a tender coming-of-age story that mixes humor with heartbreak, showing how a boy’s first experience with love teaches him about bravery, self-respect, and the complicated ways people care for one another. Lucas doesn’t magically get everything he wants, but through loss and small triumphs he begins to find his own voice and a clearer sense of who he might become.
