Biography

Simon Yam Tat-Wah, born on March 19, 1955, is a revered actor and film producer based in Hong Kong. His journey in the entertainment industry began in the mid-1970s when he transitioned from being a successful supermodel to a talented actor. Signing with the renowned Hong Kong television network TVB, Yam showcased his acting prowess in various television series before venturing into the world of cinema in 1987. Interestingly, he comes from a family with a notable background as his elder brother is Yam Tak-wing, a retired former Deputy Commissioner of Hong Kong Police.

One of Yam's notable career milestones was his role in the Japanese-Hong Kong co-production "Fainaru Faito - Saigo no Ichigeki" in 1989. This groundbreaking film was unique as it was entirely spoken in English, showcasing Yam's versatility as an actor. In 1992, he received critical acclaim for his portrayal of the maniacal Judge in the crime film "Hap do Ko Fei," where he engaged in a memorable battle against Chow Yun-Fat's character. His diverse range as an actor was further demonstrated in the action-comedy "Chiu Kap Hok Hau Ba Wong" in 1993, where he humorously embodied the character of "Dhalsim" in a Street Fighter parody directed by Jing Wong.

Yam's impact on the film industry continued to grow as he took on the role of Chiang Tin-Sung, the leader of the Hung Hing triads, in the first three installments of the "Goo Wak Chai: Yan Joi Gong Woo" film series starting in 1996. His international recognition soared with performances in acclaimed films like "Chik Loh Goh Yeung" (1992), "Saat Po Long" (2005), "Hak Se Wooi" (2005), and "Fong Juk" (2006). In 2003, he made his Hollywood debut in "Tomb Raider 2: The Cradle of Life," portraying the formidable Shaolin crime lord, showcasing his ability to seamlessly transition between different cinematic landscapes.

Yam's contributions to the entertainment industry were further highlighted in the television series "Ngo Wo Geun See Yau Gor Yue Wui II" (2000), where he portrayed Cheung-sun, the progenitor of all vampires. Despite his success, Yam faced a harrowing incident in 2019 when he was attacked during a promotional event in Zhongshan, China. The assailant stabbed him in the chest and slashed his arms, leading to a swift response from security guards and medical attention that facilitated his full recovery.
