Phillip Alford, born on September 11, 1948, in Gadsden, Alabama, rose to fame for his memorable portrayal of Jeremy "Jem" Finch in the classic 1962 film "To Kill a Mockingbird." His journey into acting began unexpectedly when he caught the attention of Birmingham's Town and Gown Civic Theatre director, who reached out to his mother about auditioning for the role of Jem. Initially hesitant, Alford eventually agreed to audition, a decision that would change the course of his life.

As one of the finalists for the role, Alford traveled to New York for a screen test and ultimately landed the iconic part of Jem Finch.
