Biography

Sabu, born Hiroyuki Tanaka in Wakayama Prefecture on November 18, 1964, is a multi-talented Japanese actor and director who has made a significant impact on the world of cinema. His journey into the entertainment industry was not a traditional one. Initially, he pursued a career in music after studying at an Osaka fashion school. However, fate had other plans for him, leading him to Tokyo where he discovered his passion for acting.

In 1986, Sabu made his film debut in Sorobanzuku, marking the beginning of a remarkable career that would see him transition from actor to director. His big break came in 1991 when he landed the starring role in World Apartment Horror, a film directed by the renowned Katsuhiro Ōtomo, known for his work on the iconic anime film Akira. Sabu's directorial debut came in 1996 with Dangan Runner, a film that showcased his unique style characterized by quirky action-comedies driven by unpredictable narratives.

Collaborating with actors like Shin'ichi Tsutsumi and Susumu Terajima, who became staples in his films, Sabu crafted a distinct cinematic universe filled with kinetic energy, dark humor, and unexpected twists. His film Blessing Bell, which deviated from his usual style, received critical acclaim and even won the NETPAC Award at the 2003 Berlin Film Festival. Sabu's versatility as a filmmaker was further showcased when he worked with the popular J-pop band V6 in some of his later projects.

Despite his success behind the camera, Sabu has never strayed far from his roots as an actor.
