Biography

Milton Gonçalves, born on December 9, 1933, in Monte Santo de Minas, Brazil, was a multi-talented individual known for his contributions to the Brazilian entertainment industry. Throughout his career, Gonçalves not only showcased his acting prowess but also delved into directing, singing, voice acting, and producing, leaving a lasting impact on the artistic landscape of Brazil. His versatility and dedication to his craft made him one of the most celebrated black actors in the country.

Starting his journey in São Paulo as part of an amateur group, Gonçalves honed his skills and eventually transitioned to a professional setting. It was during this time that he crossed paths with Augusto Boal, a pivotal moment that led him to join Teatro de Arena. This platform provided Gonçalves with a space for meaningful discussions on politics, philosophy, and art, free from the constraints of racial discrimination.

Not content with just performing, Gonçalves also delved into playwriting, penning four plays during his career. One of his works was even brought to life on stage by the Teatro Experimental do Negro under the direction of Dalmo Ferreira. In the 1990s, he ventured into politics, running as a candidate for the Rio de Janeiro state governorship. A family man at heart, Gonçalves was the father of actor Maurício Gonçalves and shared a loving partnership with his wife, Oda Gonçalves, whom he married in 1966.
