Biography

Nova Pilbeam, born Nova Margery Pilbeam, was a talented English film and stage actress whose career spanned over decades. She first captured the audience's attention as a child stage actress, showcasing her natural talent and charisma. Pilbeam's breakout role came in Alfred Hitchcock's film "The Man Who Knew Too Much" in 1934, where she portrayed a kidnapped girl, displaying her ability to captivate audiences with her performances.

Following her success in "The Man Who Knew Too Much," Pilbeam continued to shine in the industry with her lead role as Lady Jane Grey in "Tudor Rose" in 1936. Her collaboration with Hitchcock further solidified her place in the film industry, particularly with her starring role in "Young and Innocent" in 1937, a film she fondly described as one of the sunniest projects she worked on.

Despite the opportunity to work in Hollywood, Pilbeam chose to remain in Britain, where she continued to grace the screen with her presence in numerous British films throughout the 1940s. Her dedication to her craft was evident in her performances, earning her a reputation as a versatile and talented actress both on screen and on stage.

In 1939, Pilbeam married Pen Tennyson, a descendant of the renowned poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson and an assistant director to Hitchcock. Tragically, Tennyson passed away in a plane crash in 1941, leaving Pilbeam widowed. She later found love again with BBC Radio journalist Alexander Whyte, whom she was married to until his passing in 1972. Together, they welcomed their daughter Sarah Jane in 1952, bringing joy and light into Pilbeam's life.

Throughout her career, Pilbeam's commitment to her craft and her ability to bring depth and emotion to her characters left a lasting impact on the film industry. Her legacy as a talented actress endures, with her performances continuing to be celebrated by audiences and critics alike. In her later years, Pilbeam resided in London, where she remained a beloved figure in the entertainment world until her passing on July 17, 2015, at the age of 95.
