Biography
Yuen Qiu, born as Cheung Cheun-Nam in Shandong Province, China, is a remarkable Hong Kong actress and martial artist known for her expertise in Chinese martial arts and Beijing-opera skills. She trained under the same master, Yu Jim-Yuen, as legendary figures like Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung Kam-Bo at the prestigious China Drama Academy's Peking Opera School. Her journey in the entertainment industry began in the late 1960s, where she showcased her talents as a stuntwoman and even performed in nightclubs during the early 1970s.
Despite having a small role in the international production "The Man with the Golden Gun" in 1974, where she portrayed a student rescuing Roger Moore as James Bond, Yuen Qiu faced limited opportunities for stuntwomen to excel in the industry during that era. Consequently, she made the decision to step away from the Hong Kong film scene after getting married in 1974 at the age of 24. This hiatus lasted nearly two decades, marking a period of absence from the cinematic world.
Yuen Qiu's unexpected return to the spotlight occurred when she landed a role in the acclaimed film "Kung Fu Hustle." Her involvement in the movie was serendipitous, as she was initially accompanying a fellow alumna from the China Drama Academy to an audition. However, the director was captivated by Yuen Qiu's presence and talent, leading to her casting in the film. Reports suggest that it was Stephen Chow's unwavering persuasion that convinced her to take on the role, marking a significant comeback in her career.
Apart from her notable role in "Kung Fu Hustle," Yuen Qiu also graced the screen in the movie "Kung Fu Mahjong," alongside Yuen Wah. Her performances in these films showcased her versatility as an actress and martial artist, solidifying her reputation as a talented and resilient figure in the Hong Kong film industry. With her unique background in martial arts and Beijing opera, Yuen Qiu continues to captivate audiences with her presence on screen, leaving a lasting impact on the world of cinema.
