Ashlyn Gere, born Kimberly Ashlyn McKarny on September 14, 1959, in Cherry Point, North Carolina, experienced a childhood that saw her family relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada when she was just three years old. Graduating with a double major in theater and communications broadcasting from the University of Nevada, Ashlyn initially pursued a mainstream acting career under the name Kim McKamy. Her early roles in low-budget B horror films like Dreamaniac (1986) and Lunch Meat (1987) hinted at her versatility as an actress.

Despite her initial reservations about nude scenes, Ashlyn's career took a turn towards adult entertainment in the early 1990s with her starring role in The Last Resort, marking the beginning of her successful foray into the world of X-rated films.
