John Pomeroy

Biography

John Pomeroy, a visionary animator and artist, embarked on his illustrious career at The Walt Disney Company in the early 1970s. Initially starting as a background artist, his exceptional talent quickly propelled him into the role of a full-fledged animator. Pomeroy made his mark in the animation world when he worked on beloved classics like "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too."

During his tenure at Disney, Pomeroy crossed paths with influential animators Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. This fortuitous meeting led to the collaboration on the independent short film project, "Banjo the Woodpile Cat," setting the stage for their future endeavors together.

In a bold move in 1979, Pomeroy, along with Bluth, Goldman, and other Disney animators, departed from the studio to establish the groundbreaking Don Bluth Productions. Their creative partnership birthed iconic works such as "The Secret of NIMH" and the innovative animation for laserdisc video games like "Dragon's Lair" and "Space Ace."

Following a period of financial challenges, the studio underwent a transformation and emerged as Sullivan Bluth Studios, relocating to Dublin, Ireland. Pomeroy's role as the directing animator and producer flourished with projects like "An American Tail" and "The Land Before Time," solidifying his reputation as a masterful storyteller through animation.

Upon his return to the United States in 1989, Pomeroy spearheaded the establishment of a new US division for Sullivan Bluth Studios, showcasing his leadership and creative prowess within the industry.

Pomeroy's artistic journey came full circle when he rejoined Disney as the supervising animator, contributing his expertise to films like "Pocahontas" and other notable features, leaving an indelible mark on the animation landscape.

In addition to his animation prowess, Pomeroy's diverse talents shine through his sculpting abilities. His intricately crafted busts serve as a valuable tool for fellow artists in visualizing 3-D character models, showcasing his multifaceted artistry.
