Biography

Gene Wilder, born Jerome Silberman, was a multi-talented American artist known for his work as an actor, director, screenwriter, producer, singer-songwriter, and author. His career began on the stage before transitioning to the screen, where he made a memorable debut in the TV series The Play of the Week in 1961.

Wilder's breakthrough came with his role as Leopold Bloom in the 1967 film The Producers, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. This marked the start of a fruitful collaboration with the legendary writer/director Mel Brooks, resulting in classics like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, the latter of which Wilder co-wrote and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

One of Wilder's most iconic roles was as Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971), a character that has remained etched in the hearts of audiences for generations. Additionally, his comedic chemistry with Richard Pryor in films like Silver Streak, Stir Crazy, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, and Another You solidified his status as a versatile actor with impeccable timing.

Beyond acting, Wilder also ventured into directing and writing, with notable works such as The Woman in Red (1984) showcasing his talents behind the camera. His personal life was marked by his relationship with Gilda Radner, with whom he starred in three films and co-founded the Gilda Radner Ovarian Cancer Detection Center in Los Angeles following her tragic passing from ovarian cancer in 1989.
