Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, Edie McClurg was born to Mac, a mailman, and Irene McClurg, an FAA secretary, on July 23, 1951. Growing up with her older brother, Bob, who also pursued a career in acting, McClurg's passion for performance was ignited early on. She honed her craft at the University of Missouri–Kansas City in the mid-1960s and later obtained a master's degree from Syracuse University.

Making her onscreen debut in the 1976 horror classic "Carrie," where she portrayed Helen Shyres, McClurg quickly established herself as a talented actress. Her comedic prowess shone through in various roles, including Mrs. Marv Mendenhall on "The David Letterman Show" and Chastity Pariah in "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark." McClurg's involvement with the renowned Groundlings troupe in Los Angeles further showcased her comedic genius.
