Biography
Cesare Danova, originally Cesare Deitinger, was an Italian-born actor who made a name for himself in the television and film industry. After adopting the stage name Danova in Rome post-World War II, he ventured to the United States in the 1950s to pursue his acting career. His big break came with the role of Apollodorus in the 1963 film Cleopatra, alongside Hollywood icons Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Rex Harrison.
Following his success in Cleopatra, Danova went on to star as Count Elmo Mancini in Viva Las Vegas, where he portrayed Elvis Presley's romantic rival. His versatility shone through as he effortlessly transitioned between film and television, landing a significant role in the TV series Garrison's Gorillas in 1967. Despite the show's short run, Danova's portrayal of Actor showcased his talent and charisma.
One of his memorable performances was as the neighborhood mafia Don, Giovanni Cappa, in Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets in 1973. This role highlighted Danova's ability to embody complex characters with depth and authenticity. Another standout portrayal was as the corrupt town mayor, Carmine DePasto, in the cult classic National Lampoon's Animal House in 1978, where he brought a mix of humor and villainy to the screen.
Throughout his career, Danova made numerous guest appearances on popular television series like Murder, She Wrote, Maude, Falcon Crest, and the revival of Mission: Impossible from 1988 to 1990. His presence on screen always added a touch of sophistication and charm to any production he was a part of. Beyond his acting talents, Danova was known for his skills as an expert horseman, a passionate polo player, and a talented archer.
Tragically, Cesare Danova passed away from a heart attack at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences headquarters in Los Angeles while attending a meeting. His legacy lives on through his two sons, Marco and Fabrizio, from his first marriage to Pamela. Danova's contributions to the entertainment industry continue to be remembered and celebrated by fans and colleagues alike. His mausoleum in Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery stands as a tribute to his enduring impact on the world of film and television.
