Biography

Mel Archer, born in 1910 in Spokane, Washington, led a remarkable life filled with diverse experiences and accomplishments. Before making his mark in the film industry, Archer worked as a roughneck in the oil fields and even competed in the 1932 Olympics as a race walker, showcasing his athleticism and determination from a young age.

His journey took a significant turn when he joined the US Marines in 1942, where he displayed immense courage and leadership skills, eventually rising to the rank of Commissioned Warrant Officer. Archer's time in the military was marked by intense combat experiences, including fighting in hand-to-hand combat on Iwo Jima and other Japanese-held islands during World War II.

After the war, Archer returned to the Los Angeles area and transitioned into the world of film, starting as an extra before finding his niche in the art department. He worked as an illustrator for the renowned Westmore Bros makeup artists, showcasing his creative talents and attention to detail. His career continued to flourish as he became the head of the art department at Pacific Title and Art Studio, where he oversaw the creation of backgrounds and titles for numerous epic movies, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.

Archer's dedication to his craft and his contributions to iconic films such as "The Alamo" and "How the West Was Won" solidified his reputation as a talented and respected artist in Hollywood.
