Joanna Merlin, born Joann Ratner on July 15, 1931, was a remarkable American actress and casting director who left an indelible mark on both stage and screen. Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, she was born to Toni Merlin and Harry Ratner, a Jewish grocer. Her passion for acting ignited at a young age, leading her to grace the stage for the first time at just 11 years old in a community theatre production. Graduating from UCLA, Merlin honed her craft under the tutelage of the legendary Michael Chekhov, becoming one of his last living students carrying on his esteemed acting technique.
