Biography
George "Foghorn" Winslow, born George Karl Wentzlaff, was a talented child actor whose stentorian voice and deadpan demeanor captivated audiences in the 1950s. His unique raspy voice earned him the nickname "Foghorn" as he starred alongside Hollywood legends like Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant, Ginger Rogers, Dean Martin, and Jerry Lewis. Despite his young age, Winslow's performances were memorable and often stole the spotlight from his more seasoned co-stars.
Hailing from Los Angeles, Wentzlaff made a remarkable entry into show business on Art Linkletter's radio program, People are Funny. His quick wit and comedic timing caught the attention of Cary Grant, who introduced him to director Norman Taurog. This encounter paved the way for Winslow's roles in iconic films such as Room for One More (1952) and Monkey Business (1952), where he shared the screen with luminaries like Ginger Rogers and Marilyn Monroe in her debut with platinum-blond hair.
In Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), Winslow portrayed the charming Henry Spofford III, Monroe's young admirer, and left a lasting impression with his delivery of the famous line about her "animal magnetism." His comedic talent shone through in Mister Scoutmaster (1953) as he sparred with the legendary Clifton Webb and in Artists and Models (1955), alongside Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Dorothy Malone, and Shirley MacLaine. Critics hailed his performance in the latter as one of his best in his brief but impactful career.
Despite his promising start in Hollywood, Winslow made the decision to retire from acting at the tender age of 12. His legacy as a child prodigy with a commanding presence on screen endures, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be celebrated by fans of classic cinema. George "Foghorn" Winslow's contribution to the golden age of Hollywood remains a testament to his undeniable talent and unforgettable performances that transcended his young age.
