Biography

Brian Setzer, born on April 10, 1959, in Massapequa, New York, is a multi-talented American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Setzer's musical journey began in school where he played the euphonium and was involved in jazz bands. Over time, his interest shifted towards rock, punk, and rockabilly music. He co-founded the band Stray Cats with his brother, Gary, and they later added Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom to the lineup. The Stray Cats found early success in the 1980s with their unique 1950s-style rockabilly sound.

In 1980, Setzer and the Stray Cats took a bold step by selling their instruments to fund a trip to London, where they believed they could achieve more success. Their decision paid off when they met guitarist and record producer Dave Edmunds, who shared their passion for rockabilly. Under Edmunds' guidance, the band released their debut album, "Stray Cats," in 1981, which included hits like "Stray Cat Strut" and "Rock This Town." The Stray Cats' music videos on MTV further propelled their popularity in America.

Following the disbandment of Stray Cats in 1984, Brian Setzer embarked on a successful solo career. He explored different musical styles, moving away from rockabilly towards rhythm and blues (R&B) and heartland rock. Setzer's versatility as a musician was showcased in his solo albums like "The Knife Feels Like Justice" (1986) and "Live Nude Guitars" (1988), where he experimented with blues rock and collaborated with acclaimed artists like Kenny Aronoff and Robert Plant.

In 1987, Setzer made a cameo appearance as Eddie Cochran in the film "La Bamba," showcasing his acting skills alongside his musical talents. His contributions to the music industry were not limited to his solo career, as he also worked as a sideman for various acts, including the Honeydrippers led by Robert Plant. Setzer's ability to seamlessly blend different genres and his electrifying stage presence have solidified his reputation as a versatile and influential musician.

Throughout his career, Setzer continued to push musical boundaries and challenge himself creatively. His passion for music and dedication to his craft have earned him a devoted fan base and critical acclaim. Whether performing with the Stray Cats, the Brian Setzer Orchestra, or as a solo artist, Brian Setzer's impact on the world of rockabilly and beyond is undeniable.
