Biography

Philip Akin, a talented Canadian actor born on April 18, 1950, has left a lasting impact on the entertainment industry with his diverse range of roles in stage, film, and television. Over his impressive thirty-year career, Akin has showcased his acting prowess in major American films such as The Sum of All Fears, S.W.A.T., and Get Rich or Die Tryin’. Additionally, his voice work, including portraying characters like Bishop in the X-Men animated series, has solidified his presence in the world of animation.

Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Akin moved to Oshawa, Ontario at a young age and has called it home ever since. His journey into acting began at Toronto’s Ryerson Theatre School, where he became the institution’s first acting graduate in 1975. Akin's dedication to his craft is evident not only in his on-screen performances but also in his commitment to martial arts, holding a 5th degree black belt in Yoshinkan Aikido, along with training in Jing Mo Kung Fu and Tai Chi Chuan.

Throughout the 1980s and beyond, Akin captivated audiences with his roles in various television series, from the zany comedy of Bizarre to the science fiction drama of War of the Worlds. One of his most notable portrayals was as Charlie DeSalvo in Highlander: The Series, showcasing his versatility as an actor. Akin's portrayal of Kofi Annan in Shake Hands with the Devil further highlighted his ability to embody diverse characters with depth and authenticity.

In addition to his on-screen achievements, Akin is a pivotal figure in the Canadian theatre scene as a founding member and the Artistic Director of the Obsidian Theatre Company. In 2007, Akin graced the prestigious stage of the Stratford Festival of Canada, taking on the title role in William Shakespeare’s Othello and portraying Crooks in the Festival’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men.
