Terence Oliver Blanchard, born on March 13, 1962, is a prominent figure in the American jazz scene, known for his exceptional skills as a trumpeter and composer. With a career spanning over four decades, Blanchard has made significant contributions to the world of music, having composed more than 80 film and television scores, along with two operas. His talent and dedication to his craft have earned him critical acclaim, including two Academy Award nominations for his outstanding original scores for films directed by Spike Lee.

Blanchard's musical journey began in 1980 when he joined the Lionel Hampton Orchestra while pursuing his jazz studies at Rutgers University. His decision to drop out of college in 1982 to join The Jazz Messengers marked the beginning of a successful professional career that has only continued to flourish over the years. Notably, in 2021, the Metropolitan Opera in New York premiered Blanchard's opera "Fire Shut Up in My Bones," making history as the first opera by an African American composer to be staged at the renowned institution.

In addition to his remarkable musical accomplishments, Blanchard is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of talent in the jazz world. He has served in various educational roles, including as the artistic director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and the Henry Mancini Institute at the University of Miami. His passion for teaching and mentorship led him to become a visiting scholar in jazz composition at the Berklee College of Music and later to hold the Endowed Chair in Jazz Studies at UCLA.

In 2023, Blanchard took on a new role as the Executive Artistic Director of SFJAZZ, where he oversees the organization's artistic programming and provides guidance on its creative direction.
